About Women’s Health Research Day
Women’s Health Research Day commemorates the implementation of the NIH Policy on Sex as a Biological Variable. The policy outlines NIH’s expectation that SABV be factored into research design, analysis, and reporting in human, cell, and animal studies. Accounting for SABV, as noted by the NIH Office of Research on Women’s Health (ORWH), “may be critical to the interpretation, validation, and generalizability of research findings,” may inform clinical interventions, and can enhance the rigor and applicability of preclinical biomedical research.
Additionally, Women’s Health Research Day aims to raise awareness about sex- and gender-based biomedical research and advocate for increased federal funding for this work. Understanding sex differences in disease is critical for overall disease understanding and, therein, improving the health of both men and women. These differences may affect everything from disease pathophysiology to the effectiveness of various treatment options.
The information included here is intended to serve as a resource for those wishing to join the Friends of ORWH in celebrating Women’s Health Research Day and advocating for more funding for research that accounts for differences between men and women.
